North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic: $2,000 of continued support has been provided
Over the past three years FPCD has been partnering with North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic to support their work with children, immigration and housing practices in Lake County. Given the health crisis, all employees of NSLAC are working from home as they continue to support the needs of their clients. Some of the major issues the organization is working on during the Covid-19 outbreak include:
Domestic Violence
The number of cases in Lake County is up 25% and the clinic is at capacity for providing assistance. While the courts remain closed for most cases, the courts are open for the most extreme situations and for many of the emergency situations. Non-emergency cases will be dealt with once the courts reopen.
Immigration
Immigration Courts are closed at least until May 1st. In the meantime, the Legal Aid Clinic is holding virtual workshops, and continues to update their clients as needed.
Housing Practices
All evictions have been paused until May 1st. The clinic continues to advise clients and inform them about the availability of housing and utility assistance. The courts are not hearing eviction cases for the time being. However, the coronavirus crisis will have a significant impact on the vulnerable population in our community which will translate to housing problems. At this time, they do not have the funds to hire a housing attorney, which they hope to change in the near future.
