Gathering together

The Second Presbyterian Church in Chicago’s South Loop district is on the National Register of Historic Places and famous for its 21 significant stained glass windows, including nine made by Tiffany. Presbyterian Women is organizing a visit to this beautifully preserved church in the afternoon, with a morning visit to nearby Glessner House. Second Pres features exquisite wood and plaster ornamentation, chandeliers and an impressive choir loft. The docent tour will include the windows, as well as the Arts and Crafts interior elements. Glessner House, also a National Historic Landmark, is a cultural center and museum showcasing architectural design and celebrating the cultural arts from the late 1800s to the present day. Designed by American architect Henry Hobson Richardson, it was completed in 1887 and marked a radical departure from traditional Victorian architecture. It served as a source of inspiration for some of the greatest architects of all time, including Louis Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe and a young Frank Lloyd Wright. We will have a short time to eat a bring-your-own bag lunch around noon. The cost is $30. Sign up in the Friendly Office. For more information, contact Mary Getz.

PW's Full-Day Field Trip to Chicago's Second Presbyterian Church and Glessner House Friday, June 13 @ 9:00 a.m.

In a few weeks, we’ll bid a fond farewell to our friend and the Director of Faith Formation and Mission, Thom Cunningham. As Thom transitions into his new leadership role as the Executive Director of Association of Partners in Christian Education (APCE), we think about the lasting legacy he has given us. That legacy is simply this: love. Love has always been at the core of Thom’s 34 years of leadership at FPCD. Thom has dedicated his life as a Christian educator to living out his mantra: “God is good. All the time.” He has nurtured love and faith in the hearts he has touched and has had the privilege of supporting mission efforts that bring hope, education, and spiritual growth to communities in need. To continue Thom’s legacy of love and to honor his departure, FPCD is establishing “The Thom Cunningham Mission Fund.” This fund will provide ongoing support for major missions Thom helped to grow into lasting partnerships, Yucatan Presbyterian Ministries in Mexico and Atebubu Ministries in Ghana, in addition to future mission and Christian education undertakings. We cannot think of a better way to honor Thom than to expand the reach of the church, touching more lives and spreading God’s grace where it is needed most. Along with a gift of support for the missions (see "Give Now" page), we are preparing a video of photos and gratitude for Thom. Still photos and written messages may be submitted via email to production@firstpresdf.org. You may record videos on your phone with a brief message of appreciation and blessing and send them to production@firstpresdf.org. Submissions of more than 25 seconds will be curated and edited by our video technician, and longer messages will be forwarded to Thom separately.

The Independence Day Parade begins at Deerspring Pool, heads west on Deerfield Road and travels north on Park Avenue at noon. This year, FPCD will join in the fun and march in the parade. We will gather at Deerfield’s Deerspring Pool on July 4 at 11:30 a.m. to carry our Celebration banner. We’ll hand out candies and more, bearing witness to the presence and service of First Presbyterian Church and Christian Beginnings — a legacy that began in 1876 and 1973 respectively. Decorate your bikes and trikes, bring your wagons, wear your FPCD or CB t-shirt, or just dress in blue and white to bring the Church’s presence to our community’s Independence Day parade. Children must be accompanied by an adult! The parade route is approximately one mile. If you can’t walk, gather in front of the church to cheer on the participants together. Watch for more information as the day approaches!

Deerfield Independence Day Parade Friday, July 4 @ 11:30 a.m.

In 1935 rural Texas, recently widowed Edna Spaulding (Sally Field), struggles with two small children, a farm to run and very little money in the bank — not to mention a deadly tornado and the unwelcome presence of the Ku Klux Klan. Sally Field won an Academy Award for her performance in this stirring drama that mingles incredible hardship, surprising alliances and the mystery of God’s communion with humanity. The film is two hours in length, worth every minute. Snacks, lemonade and good discussion will follow. Join us in the newly air-conditioned auditorium. Watch for “Drive-In” kids movie night in August!

"Old" Movie Night: Places in the Heart Friday, July 11 @ 6:45 p.m.

Dust off your cowboy boots, dig out your bolo ties and join FPCD members and friends as we gather in Deerfield’s Floral Park to hear country music singer Mackenzie O’Brien and her band sing a variety of old and new tunes. The Fellowship Committee will stake out a good picnic table spot for everyone to meet. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket, plus a picnic dinner or snacks if you wish. There will be a party balloon twister at the park for kids during this family-friendly event, part of Deerfield’s summer concert series. O’Brien and her group are recognized as the number one young country band in the area. Her shows consist of crowd favorites from Shania Twain and Miranda Lambert covers to surprise covers from Cher, Abba, Styx, the Cranberries and even Nickelback. O’Brien also mixes in some original songs and shares quick stories about the world of writing and recording in Nashville. Join us for a fun afternoon!
