Friends of Atebubu

One beat-Many spirits -our motto
Friends of Atebubu is a non-profit interfaith organization formed in 2007 with a mission to work in partnership with the West African community of Atebubu, Ghana, to provide basic needs such as clean water, medical care, education, and spiritual growth to the local community
An adult mission trip to Ghana in 2004 was the spark for our ministry with Atebubu, followed by two additional mission trips in 2007 and 2011. Our relationship with Kwasi Ampene, an Atebubu native, is ongoing and helps to keep our ties to the village strong. Our mission is to not only supply this community with much needed help in building a Presbyterian church but to also experience the work of the Holy Spirit in Ghana. Visiting helped us to re-examine our place in the world as part of God's kingdom, to grow in our faith through Ghanaian cultural experiences, and to expand our understanding of ourselves as disciples of Christ.
In 2007, a group from our congregation went on a mission trip to rural Atebubu in Ghana, West Africa and we met Mary Asuamah who dreamed of starting a daycare center to keep the young children safe while their parents worked. We partnered with Mary to begin the Maryland Daycare Center which over the years has grown into an elementary school. As the first students of what is now Maryland Prepartory School are entering junior high, we have again partnered with Mary to build a wing of classrooms for their growing needs. In November 2021 we provided them with $22,000 from our G2G mission funds and look what they have accomplished in this short time.

In an effort to raise money for ongoing and future projects, we have sponsored a "boutique shop" which offered various Ghanaian items for sale. Other fundraising events like wine tastings, book fairs, and silent auctions have helped to sustain projects such as the clean water and medical needs of this mission.
