GET INVOLVED: Serving Together

Sign up to Support Community Supported Agriculture

LibertyPrairie.org
This is the ninth year that FPCD has partnered with Liberty Prairie (formerly Prairie Wind Family Farm), a certified organic farm in Grayslake operated by the Miller family. The Millers are committed to making a tangible difference in their community through sustainable farming, animal welfare, and fresh food access for all. By reducing the distance your food travels, you increase freshness and nutrient density and add diversity to your diet. And all while supporting local family-scale farming! Shares of vegetables, fruits and eggs are delivered to FPCD every other Wednesday, May through November.

Help Build a Home!

June 21 @ 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Last summer, members of our congregation helped to raise the walls of a new affordable home in North Chicago. This particular home is special to us, because it was paid for by North Suburban Housing, Inc., a Deerfield not-for-profit whose board includes two of our congregation members. The home will be turned over to its new owners in August, but there’s a lot of work to do before then. Can you help out? We’ll send teams of volunteers up to work from 8:00 a.m. to Noon on the following Saturdays:
May 17: Installing Flooring
June 21: Gardening

The tasks listed are tentative, but this gives a good idea of the type of work to be done. The home is part of the Matthew Homes program of ReNew Communities, a not-for-profit organization whose focus is revitalizing the city of North Chicago. By helping families own their own homes, we help bring stability to North Chicago, and we help the homeowners build a more secure future for their families. We hope you’ll join us! If one of these dates works for you, please sign up below to volunteer. If you have questions, or if you’d like to volunteer on another date, contact Sheri Donovan

Earth Care Congregation

The First Presbyterian Church is now recognized as an Earth Care Congregation by PC(USA)
What is an Earth Care Congregation? PC(USA) has established a network of congregations who pledge to keep the care of God’s creation as a central concern of the church. The network is a resource to connect, equip, and inspire congregations in this effort. Our Creation Care Committee will continue to work with the staff, the congregation, and other houses of worship to reduce the negative impacts we have on creation and inspire others to do the same.

Our Session has pledged that:
• Our worship and discipleship will celebrate God’s grace and glory in creation.
• Our education will encourage and support each other in keeping and healing the creation.
• Our facilities will be managed, maintained, and upgraded to respect and cherish all creation.
• Our outreach will encourage community involvement and public policy to protect and restore the Earth.

Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. —I Corinthians 4:1

Welcome Baskets for Our Newest Neighbors

By June 1
In our village, where affordable housing is scarce, a project called Zion Woods has opened on the campus of Zion Lutheran Church. Christened “Zion Woods,” 24 apartments of one-, two- and three bedroom dwellings will begin to open to residents as early as June 1! Our newest neighbors will hail from many places, but all will face challenges as they move into some of the nicest and safest homes they have ever had. During the month of May, help us fill laundry baskets full of essentials to welcome our new neighbors home. A checklist of what is needed and in what quantity is posted on the west hallway and available in the Wednesday eblast. Items should be new. The items include: • Paper towel rolls (pkg. of 4) • Undersink wastebasket • Toilet paper rolls (pkg. of 4) • Tableware organizer • Boxed tissues • Deck of cards • Bottled dish soap • Calendar • Dishwasher detergent • Flashlight • Napkins • Small tool kit • Dishtowels • Small laundry detergent • Notepad and pen • Artificial bouquet (small) • Scissors • Chewing gum/hard candy/breath mints • Set of glasses (4) • Bandaids

Bringing Joy to the Hearts of Students in Highwood

July & August
Summer is in the air and that brings joy to our hearts with all that goes along with this special time of year. School may seem a long ways off, but now is the time we begin to plan for the school supply drive for the students in need at Highwood’s Nuestro Center after-school program. With rising rent and food costs, the cost of school supplies is truly out of reach for many of the Latino families who live in our neighboring community. By providing those necessary supplies at the start of the school year, you can truly make a difference in these students’ lives and set them up for a successful academic year. This can be a great family project as it helps us recognize and address the needs of neighboring families. Please consider participating in one or more of the following ways: 1. Sign up in July to shop for school supplies for one or more children. 2. Make a contribution at firstpresdf.org, and FPCD shoppers will purchase the needed school supplies. 3. Pray for these children and participate in the August 10 church service when we will bless the filled backpacks before they are delivered to the Nuestro Center.
